  1. Greek Stoic philosopher who encouraged people
  2. to refrain from self-interest and to promote
  3. the common good of humanity. He believed that
  4. people were in the hands of an all-wise
  5. providence and that they should endeavour to
  6. do their duty in the position to which they
  7. were called. Born at Hierapolis in Phrygia,
  8. he lived for many years in Rome as a slave
  9. but eventually secured his freedom. He was
  10. banished by the emperor Domitian from Rome in
  11. AD 89.
